Regulations and Standards
Pocket money, leisure and clothing allowances provided within residential care can be used to help children develop money management and finance skills and awareness.
Children living within residential care are supported financially through allowances that enables them to undertake daily routines whilst also supporting children and young people to improve their financial skills and awareness of money including how much things cost.
The allowances that children and young people receive within residential care are as follows:
- Pocket Money (Weekly);
- Clothing Allowance (Monthly);
- Winter Allowance;
- Travel Allowance (Daily) To support Children/Young People to attend education, college, apprenticeships);
- Birthday Allowance (Annually) This includes an activity of their choice within reason and meal with family and/or staff;
- Christmas Allowance (Annually);
- Festive Allowance (Annually) Supporting Children/Young People who follow a religion;
- Independence Allowance (Weekly) Children and Young People who are 16 years or older who’s placement plan identifies for them to move into a supported or semi supported accommodation receive an allowance in preparation for when they move into a independence provision;
- Mobile Phone Allowance (Monthly).
